8 Engaging Polish English Bilingual Activities for Young Children

Raising a bilingual or multilingual child isn’t just about understanding and speaking multiple languages; it’s about joyful learning, playful exploration, and meaningful and wonderful connections just because you know another language.

Play and exploration are easy ways to promote bilingualism if you're a caregiver in a multilingual home or simply want to start introducing your child to Polish and English at a young age.  We have included Polish-English bilingual activities that can help your young one become more confident in both Polish and English languages, while maintaining a cheerful and pleasurable atmosphere.

1. Name That Object

Children are curious by nature. Use that interest to your advantage! Choose simple objects like spoons, shoes, or teddy bears and name them in both Polish and English.

Example: "To jest misio – this is a teddy bear."

Soon, with this Polish-English bilingual activity, the child will start connecting the two words with the same object and effortlessly building their vocabulary.

2. Sing Songs in Two Languages

Music is one of the most helpful forms of art for learning a language. In Polish and English, sing familiar nursery rhymes or songs.

Start with “Wlazł kotek na płotek” and then move to “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”

You don't need to hit all the high notes – preschoolers enjoy the sound of their parents’ voices, and with songs, they often learn the rhythm and flow of language easily.

3. Label the House

In this activity, use markers to creatively color name basic household items in Polish and English such as stół / table or okno / window.

Associative labeling strengthens word recognition and comprehension and ties concepts to specific places.

Bonus: Have the child decorate the labels which enhances engagement.

4. Storytime Swap

Select picture books in Polish and English or read one book and recount the tale in the other language. Repetitive storytelling becomes more enjoyable for children, and exposure to the same concept in different languages strengthens sentence formation and vocabulary skills.

In Dibber International Preschool & Nurseries, we tell stories in both English and Polish to foster bilingualism naturally and make learning more engaging.

5. Bilingual Role Play

This is one of the more fun Polish-English bilingual activities. From a chef to an astronaut, children can explore a variety of careers through role playing, and through this, they can apply what they have learned, contextually. You can steer them in both languages.

For instance:

Child: “Chciałbyś zjeść zupę?”

Parent: “Yes, I’d love some soup!”

This type of play allows for smooth language switching while having fun using real-life situations.

6. Matching Flashcard Games

Using flashcards and shuffling them, your child can match the image with the respective word in Polish or English. It's a fun, educational memory challenge with a hidden bilingual vocabulary twist! Create flashcards with images and words of animals, food, and emotions, then add to the list as our children grow.

 7. Daily Activities with a Unique Approach

Integrate both the languages as you perform daily activities like dressing, bathing, and preparing for sleep.

“Czas spać – it’s time to sleep” or “Załóż buty – put on your shoes” can be used as a verbal command.

Eventually, these routines facilitate recognition of both languages during actions and empower the child to pick up language naturally - no extra screen time or worksheets required!

8. Purposeful Social Interactions with Peers

If possible, schedule social interactions with children from families that speak Polish, English, or both. Interactions with peers serve as a strong motivator for children to talk freely. You will be astonished to learn how much young children actually retain from each other when they are allowed unstructured time together in a multilingual environment.

Conclusion

Having a bilingual capability enhances one’s life socially, emotionally, and cognitively. It acts as a bridge through different cultures as well as widening a child’s perspective on the world. Without a doubt, these simple games and moments throughout the day allow children to “sponge” grasp both English and Polish in a non-stressful environment.

Don’t forget that it is about progress and joy in learning, not perfection. For those introducing the Polish language to an English-speaking child or the other way around, maintaining a strategic and consistent approach is key.

Here at Dibber, we believe that learning two languages can and should be an organic and joyful experience. Thus, we offer Polish-English bilingual activities through which our young children learn to actively participate and gain new and enjoyable learning experiences. They develop self-esteem as communicators and build a sense of wonder that motivates them to explore the world. Together, let’s develop curious, confident, and lifelong learners with hearts (and words) for the world.
