How Gen Alpha is Influenced by Millennial Parenting Techniques and Its Impact on The Future of Parenting
Millenialsi, w wieku od 27 do 40 lat, wychowują pokolenie Alfa. Przyjęli oni odmienny styl rodzicielstwa w porównaniu do wcześniejszego pokolenia, czyli Generacji X.
Według raportu Beano Brain, millenialsi podchodzą do rodzicielstwa z planem, celem i profesjonalizmem – traktują je niczym karierę. Skupiają się na przesunięciu podejścia rodzicielskiego z „rób tak jak ja” na „naprawmy to, co zrobiliśmy”.
Millennial parents are focused on being omnipresent in their children's lives. You might think that millennial mothers will focus on both i.e. their careers as well as parenthood, but according to the above-mentioned white paper, they are putting their children's needs first and are ready to give up their careers. Unlike Generation X mothers, they are foregoing “we can have it all” parenting approach.
Let's dive into some data.
34% of millennial parents actively planned and researched before having children.
47% of Millennial parents have referred to and read up on selected millennial parenting styles.
The Goldfish Bowl
Millennials have lived in an Internet era and that is why they believe in the Internet more than their parents, that is Generation X. It has been found that millennial parents rely more on the Internet regarding parenting advice. 42% of millennial parents said that they were under pressure to keep up with their peers. However, only 26% of Gen. X parents said they were under pressure to be at par with their peers.
With a constant bombarding of social media, 3/4 of millennial parents are trying their best to keep their children from social media.
Being Present
Gen X parents focused more on their work rather than on children. That is why millennial parents don’t want to miss any moment of their children. While growing up, we might remember our mums being there for us while our dads were out there earning the bread. However, millennial dads are more emotionally present than ever. 62% of millennial dads say that they want to share their millennial parenting duties alongside millennial mothers.
No Formal Schooling
Considering how the world is changing constantly, millennial parents are pushing back the idea of formal education. This change has happened because the traditional roots in careers are no longer applicable in modern life. A lot of parents believe that schools are not preparing their children to be future global citizens. Only 12% of parents agree that their children should attend university.
Mental Peace Over Financial Success
Millennial parents do not want their children to indulge in the rat race. They prefer their children's happiness over being successful. The older generations did not focus a lot on the mental well-being of their children. However, the current generation of millennial parents are more focused on the mental and physical well-being of their children.
What Does This Mean?
The parents are not striving to be only parents. They also want to become friends with their children. That is why we can see a lot of Gen Alpha children are very close with their parents. They are celebrating their children's individuality and are open to new concepts of learning.
